Brief Bio:

I transferred to the U of M in the spring of 2004. In order to get some firsthand clinical experience, I decided to start volunteering in the ER at Baptist Memorial Hospital (Memphis) through the Experience Critical Program. It was a great opportunity that really nailed down for me the desire to pursue a medical career. I participated in this program from October, 2004 through July, 2005.

During the summer of 2005, I took a week off in June to attend a summer camp sponsored by the MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). This was definitely a life-changing experience, as I was greatly humbled by the opportunity to care for children with such a debilitating disease. I really enjoyed my time at the camp and plan to return again this June.

Another life-altering occurrence in my life happened when I visited the local Red Cross shelter to volunteer during the Hurricane Katrina crisis. I was assigned the task of giving refugees information about jobs, free meals, and housing in the Memphis area. It was heartbreaking to see so many individuals who either lost everything or just had no other place to go. I began working in the department of developmental neurobiology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in July of 2005. I am a lab technician in charge of genotyping. I am very grateful to have acquired this job through a fellow AED member (Gus Mealor).

Being introduced to the research side of medicine has expanded my view of the field as a whole. I will be starting med school at UT-Memphis in the fall of 2006. Mrs. Eldin and the staff in the pre-health office were very helpful during the horrific application process, and I'm thankful that they were available to assist me in whatever way they could
